Lavander blues: French growers face an uncertain future

France’s south-east region of Provence is famed for its production of lavender and hybrid lavender, called lavandin, a symbol of the summer when the blue and mauve flowers of the plants explode in colour and heady fragrance. But many of the century-old plantations are facing an increasing double threat to their existence, from over-production and climate change. Pierre Isnard-Dupuy reports on the crisis from France’s Valensole plateau, traditionally a major centre of the country's lavender trade, where some are turning to alternative, and notably organic, methods for growing the coveted aromatic plant.

The lessons to be learnt from France's worst wildfire in decades

The gigantic wildfire which, in barely more than 48 hours, burnt through about 17,000 hectares (42,000 acres) of vegetation and forestland in southern France this week has finally been halted, but there vare fears it may reignite as an intense heatwave and return of strong winds have been announced for the weekend. For an explanation of the magnitude of this exceptional wildfire, the tactics employed to contain it, and the lessons to be learned from it, Mickaël Correia turned to Éric Brocardi, a senior firefighter and spokesman for France's National Federation of Firefighters.

Extreme Hunger In Gaza. France To Recognize Palestinian State

July 25, 2025 • A deepening hunger crisis is gripping Gaza, with more than 120 deaths from starvation reported — most of them children. As Gaza's humanitarian crisis deepens and ceasefire talks stall, French President Emmanuel Macron says his country will formally recognize a Palestinian state— becoming the first G7 nation to do so.

France's recognition of Palestinian state: why Macron has finally taken the plunge

The French president has announced that Paris will formally recognise the state of Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly in September. After long waiting for backing from both Western and Arab allies, the French head of state has now decided to go it alone. As Mediapart's political correspondent Ilyes Ramdani reports, the impact of this decision - which has already been angrily condemned in Tel Aviv and criticised in the United States - will largely depend on Paris’s ability to stand firm against Israeli pressure.

Mediapart has since May been publishing a series of reports regularly sent to it from inside the Gaza Strip by two young Palestinians. Nour Elassy, a 22-year-old journalist, who is also a poet and writer, and Ibrahim Badra, a 23-year-old journalist and human rights activist, chronicle the grim reality of life and death in Gaza as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues to wage a genocidal war against the population of about 2.1 million. In this episode, Elassy recounts the pain and sorrow of her evacuation from Gaza earlier this month, after being offered a place at France’s prestigious social sciences school, the EHESS, while Badra, who remains in Gaza, recounts more of the dire plight of the population facing starvation.

French prime minister François Bayrou embroiled in second school abuse scandal

On Wednesday a parliamentary inquiry led by MPs published its reported on the scandal at the prestigious Notre-Dame-de-Bétharram private Catholic school in south-west France and the wider issue of the abuse of pupils in French schools. Prime minister François Bayrou, a former education minister and local politician whose own children attended that school, was criticised by the inquiry for “failing to act” in relation to the scandal. However, in their report, the MPs also refer to the “Pélussin affair”, which broke in 1995 at a Catholic boarding school in the south-east of France. According to documents uncovered by Mediapart, in that case, too, François Bayrou ignored whistleblowers, who have now attacked his “inaction”. Mathilde Mathieu and David Perrotin report.

Scams, porn and illegal casinos: the dirty money of a French online payment giant

An international investigation called 'Dirty Payments', conducted by Mediapart and 20 other global media outlets, reveals the billions of euros in dubious transactions processed by the French online payments giant Worldline, a group run by the cream of France's elite. The probe shows how for ten years, and with complete impunity, the group handled these fraudulent or unethical payments on behalf of the worst figures in e-commerce: online swindlers, illegal casinos, shady pornography groups and prostitution websites. Following the initial publication of the revelations by the European Investigative Collaborations (EIC) network, prosecutors in Belgium announced they were launching an investigation into alleged “money laundering” in relation to Worldline's Belgian operation. In a statement, Worldline said it would cooperate with the authorities in Brussels. Yann Philippin and Clément Rabu report.

'We've been the capital of torture for 7 months': locals angry over statue of notorious French general

General Marcel Bigeard was a highly-decorated officer in the French Army who later became a politician. But in recent years his name has been closely linked with the widespread use of torture that some French soldiers carried out on prisoners during the Algerian War of Independence. In October 2024 the local council at Toul in north-east France where Bigeard was born erected a statue in his honour. Aggrieved at having a man associated with torture honoured in this way, some residents in the town are now seeking to get the monument removed and have just taken their case to the administrative court. They describe the statue's presence as a “slap in the face” for the victims of torture in Algeria. Laura Wojcik reports.

Ordeal of New Caledonian prisoners 'deported' to France

Following the unrest that took place in May 2024 in its Pacific Ocean territory of New Caledonia, the French state transferred seven high-profile activists accused of involvement in the disturbances to mainland France, amid much controversy. But at the same time the Paris authorities also secretly flew dozens of convicted criminals from their New Caledonian cells to serve in prisons around France, for reasons that still remain unclear. Some of these prisoners have since been released from jail, but now lack the financial means either to live in metropolitan France or to pay for the long flight back home. Rémi Carayol and Benoît Godin report on the fate of these abandoned “deportees”, most of whom are Kanaks, the indigenous people of New Caledonia.
